Raptoryx - Chaotic Beasts

As we are currently in lockdown, and I have no painting competitions to do I have decided to try and get as much off my desk as possible. Including these guys, that have been sat gathering dust for the last 8 months. They've been done to table top standard and done mostly with Contrast paints to make it as quick as possible. The first one I did on its own just as a colour test, using a bearded vulture as my inspiration, as they remind me of vultures hunting across a savannah in search of carrion or unwary adventurers.

Just a note if you haven't already built yours, don't stick them to their bases until you've painted them. They are really low to the base and a pain to paint underneath with the base in the way.

Base coat them with wraith bone spray and then I did the following process to paint mine up.

Base coats:

Head - Basilicanum Grey
Body - Gryph-hound orange
Wings, feathers, tail tip, claws, spikes (not wing-claws), back of ruffle - Black Templar
Inside of ruffle, eyes & mouth: Khorne Red
Head horns, wing-claws & feet: Ratskin Flesh
Bandages: Thunderhawk blue (why do they even have these? they have no hands, how could they put them on??)
Stone on bases: Black Templar

The rest of the team getting their base coats on
Detailing:

Black Templar & Grey areas - Highlight with Thunderhawk blue & Wraithbone, then final highlight of wraith bone. Shade with Black Templar where needed.

Khorne Red areas - highlight khorne red and wraith bone, shadow with Black Templar and Khorne Red. For the eyes build up light like a gem with a final dot of wraith bone

Ratskin Flesh areas - feet and base of wing-claw shade with Gore-Grunta fur and water. Highlight
with Ratskin Flesh and Cadium Fleshetone adding Wraithbone, highlight the claws more than the feet

Bandages - shade with Black Templar and water, highlight with Thunderhawk blue adding wraith bone for final edge highlight.

Orange - shade with Gore-grunta Fur and water in areas that would not be hit by light, use Iyanden Yellow on the top/lighter areas.

Spikes and Piercings - Black Templar base, Iron Hands Steel and Black Templar to shade.

Basing:

I wanted a desert type base, so I went with brown coloured stones, gluing these in random places on the base, then added sand on the rest of the base. Painted all of the sand (not stones) in Steel Legion Drab, the rim was painted with Rhinox Hide. Then I used Tyrant Skull to dry brush over the sand and stones. Then added a couple of mountain tufts from Army Painter.

And Done!
